We are extremely grateful for regular donations of any amount. They enable us to plan ahead, rather than just react to the crisis needs – and to take a long-term view of our work in the kisenyi and Kataanga slum... which is vital when it comes to children's education and future. So thank you!
What can you give to regularly? We have identified these key areas:
DONATE BY PAYPAL
Sponsor a child's education for just £35 per month in a boarding private primary school.
In Uganda, primary education is almost free... in government schools but there is a need of £15 (day scholars) per month a parent has to pay, but parents still have to pay for uniform, pencils, books, even toilet paper. This means many don’t bother and the kids stay at home... or scavenge on the nearest rubbish tip. Lots drop out from becoming orphaned or because their parents are just too poor. Our sponsorship package provides education at the Child Branches of life Int’l for the poorest and most vulnerable children who want to get to school.
Your monthly donation will pays for some of the school’s running costs and staff wages, uniform, shoes, books, play equipment, healthcare and resources. That’s amazing to think how far your money will stretch. So... want to help?
Sponsors receive two or three letters a year from the child and at least one photograph every year - which you can stick on the fridge to remember them! You can make it as personal as you like… some sponsors send letters and birthday presents… it’s up to you and we can offer advice on how to proceed.
Social worker and IGA officer sponsorship:
There isn’t an effective welfare system operating in Uganda, let alone the Kisenyi slum, where things are much worse. To combat this for the families of our pupils, we have developed a welfare team of our own, which regularly works around kisenyi to pick up absentees from school and act as a kind of mini-social service and counselling system for the families. In addition, we have an IGA (Income Generating Activity) team which works specifically with the parents to help improve their skills and income… and it’s entirely funded by us. Our social work and IGA teams have salaries ranging between £30 to £70 per month.
Actually, it is proving extremely effective through a series of programmes:
- Regular home visits for children,
- Business training for parents,
- Grants for parents to start businesses,
- Business mentoring for parents,
- Savings scheme for parents,
- Specific training sessions for parents/guardians (health, literacy, parenting skills)
- Advocating child and women rights.
Social work and IGA team sponsorship involves funding part of our field staff’s salary – as much as you prefer, starting at £10 per month.
Our meal is the same every day... posho and beans. Posho is the traditional Ugandan dish of maize flour cooked with water to a porridge-like consistency. We serve the posho with beans cooked with some cabbage and onions. With more funds, we will be able to vary the children’s diet and even add meat on occasions, so your donation will help us improve nutrition. This in turn will help the kids grow properly and fight off the many illnesses and infections they face in the slum.
Pupil selection for the boli involves choosing children from streets and only the poorest families in the slum – and most of those children eat just once a day; sometimes they go a whole day with nothing to eat.
So, we step in to provide a free meal for all the children at the school, plus a second meal for the neediest.
One meal costs around 15p per child. We start our sponsorship at just £5 per month, but you can pay for more if you wish!
